Bowling Basin · Forth & Clyde Canal

Two hundred years of arrivals.
And onward journeys.

Seven rooms on the canal, houseboats on the water, a sauna in the byre, and the towpath at the door, Glasgow fifteen minutes the other way. The same job since 1800, only now the cargo is you. Let yourself in; the kettle's on.

The Customs House hotel on the Forth and Clyde Canal at Bowling, Glasgow

Same job. Since 1800.

Welcoming arrivals,
since 1800.

The Customs House stands at the western mouth of Scotland's oldest canal. It was built to do one thing: log what came through Bowling Harbour, look after it, and let it pass.

Whisky, sugar, tobacco, cloth, timber, salt, tea. Cargo arrived. It was logged. It moved on. Two centuries later the building does the same thing, only now the arrivals stay the night.
